Chocolate Bar--Economy & EcologyAfter you have watched the CNN video Cocoa-Nomics and completed the Viewing Guided Notes, you and a team will be ready to explore and research some of the related issues of the worldwide supply chain related to the production of chocolate:
|
Looking at other products that go into the manufacture of some candy bars, research issues of their production and regions on the environment:
5. Chocolate Factory, for example the Hershey factory in Pennsylvania, USA, N. America. What challenges exist for this business to do as little harm as possible to the environment with regard to waste management? For example, the Zero Waste to Landfill program 6. A sugar plantation, for example one in the Caribbean, has many environmental impacts and issues involved in production, such as found in "An Enormous Employer Of Labor, Capital And Resources. But Is It Productive?" 7. A farming cooperative making corn syrup, for example in Iowa in the Midwestern USA, N. America, has to deal with the environmental decision of whether or not to use Genetically Modified Corn as well as the health concerns for the use of high fructose corn syrup in many products. 8. A paper company in the Northwestern USA, N.America. How do these companies assure sustainable harvesting of lumber for the paper used to create wrappers for candy bars? What environmental factors are associated with this part of the candy bar supply chain? |

You've previously watched the CNN cocoa documentary and filled in notes on the guide
(file above; 10 points)
1.You and your group members should all start on the website for your chocolate research topic provided above. Each of you will open a Google Doc (to share with other members) or Microsoft Word page to collect information on your topic. Use EasyBib to cite each source you use. Copy and paste those MLA citations onto the document that contains your research. Each individual in the group should use at least two difference sources.
2. Turn your research notes document into an Executive Summary, a CONDENSED version of your notes, short enough that a busy executive would have time to read and glean the most necessary information. You can compose this version as a separate document or add it on after the longer notes you gathered.
3. Then each member of your group will find your topic on the Discussion section of eClass. Work together to post information so that each one of you posts succinct facts on your specific topic without much overlap.
4. Read the other posts on topics explored by different groups and classmates. Choose at least two to which you will write a thoughtful response and post them. (20 points for your individual notes, post, and responses.)
5. You will write a letter (Use the Microsoft word> NEW> search office.com for business letter> choose one to use to format yours.) to a policy maker, corporation, or organization using facts from the notes on the video you watched in class AND facts from at least two of the small group topic research. (20 points.) Suggestions will be forthcoming if you can't think of an audience for your synthesized thoughts on the topic. You will also put an electronic version into Ms. Lanio's eClass drop box with the following elements highlighted: (a) where you used information from the Cocoa-nomics video, (b) info from one of the small group research topics, and (c) info from a second small group research topic's fact sheets
